3 Real Metrics of Managerial Success in SaaS

Last week, I was a proud manager.

One of my team members got promoted. Another two saw their paychecks rise. The third was able to commit to a longer term relationship with the company.

They all had been with the company for several years, and had diligently performed their duties. There was no expectation from anyone that they needed to get paid more.

We did all of these proactively, without waiting for the employee to come in and demand a raise — a tough ask in the best of times.

This brings me to managerial philosophy: what should be the right metrics that measure success to drive a performance culture?

Metric #1

How many promotions/salary increments have you affected in your team in the last 12 months?

This is a clean measure and is directly tied to growth and value creation. We can’t promote people if the company isn’t growing. And conversely, there can be no growth without investment in your best resources.

In a post-pandemic work environment, employees and employers who are open to remote workers are being exposed to more global options for talent.

Employees could be passively looking for new jobs that continue to keep them remote. As one user tweeted (my paraphrase):

We look for company announcements where the CEO has announced a “return to work” policy. We ask our recruiters to reach out to…
